• A Padlock Kept Us Apart, but Wild Horses Couldn’t Keep Me Away

There’s a little monastery right near the cliffs of Emona. It’s old and lovely and was unfortunately locked. But I wanted to see the inside, so I put those monkey arms I was born with into good use and launched myself up the side. I only wish I were better at parkour.

  • Riding the Wave of Confusion to Wake Up

Right. I’m trying to wrap my head around what day it is still, but at the very least, I know where I am. I’ve made it to Bulgaria and am currently staying in a hotel in a little resort town by the beach. I have a balcony, but not a view. I can see other buildings, but that seems very meta to me somehow. Maybe I’m jetlagged.

  • So Sleepy…

Bear with me, I’m a little out of it. My day started at an ungodly hour this morning, wherein my brother-in-law dropped my sleepy butt off at the airport to start my journey to Bulgaria.

  • Goodbye Turkey!

Turkey was so much fun from start to finish. After such a long and tiring dig season, it was really necessary to relax and explore and just have a normal-person vacation. I realize I haven’t updated the blog as much as I normally would while travelling. It was such a time-consuming dig season and I had to make a choice between submitting archaeological work I could be proud of and finding time to update my travelogue. Once I got to Turkey, I just wanted to fill my days with relaxation and adventure. Sitting down to write blog posts was extra work I wasn’t quite ready to take on.

  • Hot Air Ballooning!

The alarm went off at 4:20am. Nothing new for me, but I do believe I sprang out of bed because today was the day I got to go hot air ballooning. Floating up in the air is an odd thing, you don’t really feel it. It’s just a realization of, “Oh, the ground just got further away.” But it was so beautiful and peaceful.

  • Let The Rabbit Tell Your Fortune

There are some things I come across while traveling that I know are a scam. Some are just so bizarre though, I can’t really pass them up. After all, it was the first – and potentially last – time I’ve ever seen this particular sign:

  • I Made It

It’s been a tough few days. It’s hard to have been one of the last ones to leave Jordan, saying goodbye so many times to so many people I’ve fallen in love with. My roommates, my fieldmates, my friends. This morning, I said the last goodbyes I’ll have to say of this season. Olivia and Sashiere woke up early with Nikki and I and saw us off. Doug took us to the airport and hugged us before dropping us at the terminal. I said goodbye to Nikki in the Turkish airport as she went on to her connecting flight and I went through to customs and baggage claim.
