Speedskating!
Just over a week ago, I put on a pair of skates for the first time in ten years. Though things started out a little rocky, skating seems to be just like riding a bike. I did manage to fall down, but it only happened once, so I declare a victory over skating.
Stacey is an amazing teacher. I was having some issues, since speed skates are a little different than regular skates, but it turned out it wasn’t me, but the boots. For once I could blame ineptitude on the equipment without it being an excuse!
This week, we went back for more. Once again, it took me about 20 minutes to remember how to skate again. You would think that I would have done better than that given I was just there last week, but apparently my muscle memory is spotty.
Once I’d found my ice-legs, it was time to learn some new tricks. Stacey’s friend Josh was so patient with me, considering how bad I can be at moving my body sometimes. I am still astonished I picked up rowing as quickly as I did.
Josh helped me figure out some of the basics of gliding and didn’t laugh too hard at me when I had two very spectacular falls. You know how rocks skip along the water’s surface when you throw them just right? Picture that, but with my body in place of the rock and ice in place of the water. I will definitely have some bruises tomorrow, but I’ve already iced my wounds.
Get it? Cause I fell on the ice!
