Goodbye Nicaragua 2009

It’s taken me almost a week since being home from Nicaragua, but I’ve finally managed to sit down and write this post. Last Monday, I woke up at the crack of dawn to haul my tired and still sick bum out of the sweet comfort of a real bed so I could go home to my own bed.

Just imagine that for a second. For the last month, I had been sleeping on beds of questionable cleanliness and ones who assured backaches from a distinct lack of padding. I was pretty upset about having my sleeping time cut short by the alarm, but at the same time, thoughts of my. own. bed. kept me moving towards the airport.

After getting the last of my stuff packed into my duffle, Jenn walked me across the street to the airport and we said our goodbyes. It’s hard to walk away from a friend when you get used to seeing them on a daily basis. Jenn wants Canadian citizenship (she’s American, and really, who doesn’t want to be Canadian?), so maybe to fill the void, I’ll let her marry me. You know, ’cause that’s legal in Canada. Free health care and basic human rights for all!

The flights were pretty uneventful. As usual, I don’t actually remember them because I drugged myself beyond cognition to keep from heaving on the plane. But! I do remember that Continental Airlines fed me again. This is the second time in a row they’ve offered me a gluten-free meal. They’re the only airline I’ve flown with that has actually managed this feat.

I made it home safe and sound, was attacked by my dogs when I walked in the house because, “Oh my god, seriously, where have you been?!” would be what they would have yelled at me if they had the ability to talk. This whole week has seen them be unnaturally cuddly with me, so I think they’re pretty terrified I’ll just up and leave again for no apparent reason only to waltz back through the door a month later.

Looking back at Nicaragua, now that my bug bites have almost completely healed, it was a good trip overall. Yes, there was the random thieving, the staring and the inappropriate touching, the really bad glutening again, and of course – I’ve said it a thousand times – the bugs, but there was also a bunch of beautiful beaches, humid air that made my skin feel super soft and turned my hair into full-bodied curls, the was archaeologying with a good friend, and lots of fun stories.

I hope you all have been entertained by my ramblings during Nicaragua 2009 and that you’ll be back here when I start posting from wherever I find myself next. I have big plans for 2010, but they’re all up in the air at the moment, so I’m keeping mum until I get some confirmation on things.

Right now I have to… go… to work. *shudder*
