Don’t Fly United Airlines

In the wee hours of the morning, I woke up in a great mood and surprisingly free of my normal airplane anxiety. I figure this was because I was just so excited to get away from the chill of Calgary in winter and enjoy some much needed rest in the sunshine.

This only lasted from my Calgary-Denver flight. I have never been more sick in my life than I was on the flight from Denver to Cancun. It’s always so difficult to be in a confined space and having to throw up every 30 minutes. I kid you not, it was 30 minutes on the dot each time. I couldn’t even manage to get a sip of ginger ale down.

So that was awkward and stressful and painful, but I managed to survive. I mistakenly thought to myself that things couldn’t get any worse from here, which of course caused things to get worse.

Coming off the plane, every passenger is ushered into this huge long room with about 700 other passengers. Then we formed our own imaginary lines while four customs agents work to get everyone through. Four. Just four. So you can imagine how long that took.

After that, I was so excited and relieved to be at baggage claim. I stood eagerly at Carousel 4 and watched for my bag to come out. And watched. And watched. And then I searched. And searched, but it was all for nought.

I went over to the baggage claim desk and found that indeed, my baggage had been left back in Denver. Now this is a real problem. I’m only in Cancun for the night and am leaving early tomorrow morning to go to Merida. Needless to say, United Airlines is now blacklisted from my list of acceptable airlines.

The worst part is that I think my dad jinxed me. I told him yesterday that I was flying United and he said, “Watch out, they’re going to leave your luggage behind somewhere.”

Thankfully, the guy at the claim desk assured me they would find a way to get my bag to me, but at the same time, I’m feeling a little doubtful. I think you can understand why.

I showed up at the joining hotel just time to catch the rest of the group on their way to dinner, but at this point, I was just too tired and sick to eat anything.

I’m finally feeling the pangs of hunger though, so I think I’m going to go snack on my gluten-free pretzels and go straight to bed.
