Coffee Yogurt

When I was little – and I mean like, four – my favourite treat was a cup of coffee yogurt. Don’t worry, I turned out okay. Right?

Finding coffee yogurt was easy in Montreal. I clearly wasn’t the only addict enthusiast, but when we moved to Calgary, the yogurt shelf in the supermarket didn’t have my favourite brand or flavour. I went through withdrawal I learned to live without it, until recently, I had a craving that wouldn’t go away.

So a thought occurred: I have coffee. I have yogurt. By your powers combined, I have coffee yogurt!!

Because I didn’t find any good recipes for it on the Internet, here’s what I came up with. It tastes exactly like what I remember from when I was little.


Jillian’s Awesomesauce Coffee Yogurt


– 3 tsp brown sugar (heaping, but not too heaping, you don’t need diabetes now)
– 2 tsp instant coffee
– 1 tsp vanilla
– boiling water
– 1 cup plain, balkan-style yogurt (the thicker, the better)


Put 2 tsp brown sugar, the instant coffee, and the vanilla into a 1 cup sized measuring cup. Boil the water and then add it to the measuring cup, filling to the 1 cup line. Mix until everything is dissolved.

Pour the mixture into a small saucepan and put your stove on low for about 5 minutes. You want to steam off some of the water, but you don’t want the mixture to boil. Even instant coffee can be made to taste really bitter.

Take the mixture off the heat and pour some of it into the the yogurt, mixing as you go. Pour to your taste. The more you add, the more coffee flavour, but the more watery the final product. I used about 1/4 of the mixture to 1 cup of yogurt, but you might want more or less. Add in the last tsp of brown sugar and mix it all together.

The recipe expands well, just add whatever leftover mixture you have to the next cup of yogurt (again, to your taste) and mix in another 1tsp of brown sugar for each extra cup of yogurt.
